Welcome to Hopelab Foundation Inc. (“Hopelab,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a social innovation lab and impact investor at the intersection of tech and youth mental health. When we say “you” or “user,” we’re referring to anyone who interacts with the Hopelab.org website (the “Site”) or the services we provide (our “Services”). Our Services include investments and collaborations for mental health products and services, advancement of tech solutions for youth mental health, and design and research to support digital innovation.

First, a note about Hopelab’s commitment to your privacy:

Hopelab deeply values its role in improving youth mental health. Central to that role is safeguarding the privacy of personal information.

This Privacy Policy describes our privacy practices in user-friendly terms, including what information we collect in order to facilitate our Site and our Services, what we use your information for, how we may share your information when needed, and the rights and preferences you may have with respect to your personal information.

Here are a few things we want you to know:

Definitions. So we are clear about the terms we are using, when we use the term “Personal Information” in this Privacy Policy, we mean information about you that is personally identifiable to you, such as your contact information (e.g., name, address, email address, or telephone number) and any other nonpublic information that is associated with such information. And when we talk about our “Partners,” we mean organizations that are also dedicated to the well-being of young people and with which we collaborate by, among other things, sharing Personal Information; our Partners are listed on our Site.
We only use your Personal Information for purposes described in this Privacy Policy. We know it is important to you that you be aware of the reasons your information is handled by Hopelab.
We do our best to minimize the amount of Personal Information we store. We understand the importance of keeping to a minimum the personal and sensitive data that we may maintain.
We do not sell your Personal Information without your consent.
We offer you ways to control your Personal Information and express your preferences. We provide you with a variety of ways to exercise control over your Personal Information, including making certain data collection optional and providing you with unsubscribe options.

This Privacy Policy describes how Hopelab handles Personal Information that we collect through our digital properties that link to this Privacy Policy, including our Site and Services, as well as through social media, our marketing activities, and other activities described in this Privacy Policy. Information we collect from you may be subject to state data privacy laws and the Federal Trade Commission’s authority.

By accessing or using our Site and Services, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree to this Privacy Policy, please do not use the Site or Services. We also encourage you to review our Terms & Conditions to understand other requirements and limitations related to your use of the Site and Services. Unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy, capitalized terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms of Use.

1. Personal Information We Collect

We collect Personal Information through your use of our Site and Services. Personal Information is referred to as “personal data” in some countries. We collect and use several categories of information, each of which is described below.

Personal Information You Provide to Us. We collect Personal Information when you choose to share that information with us, such as by signing up for our newsletter, participating in a discussion session, or submitting a job application. Personal information you provide to us may include:

Contact information, such as your name, email address, mailing address(es), and phone number;
Demographic information, such as your date of birth, gender identity, and race;
Communications with us via our Site and Services;
Survey data and other responses to our questions, such as information you provide when completing one of our well-being questionnaires or information you may provide during discussion sessions with us;
Health-related information including information on your past treatments and/or mental health conditions;
Audio or video recordings of you, if you agree to allow us to record any discussion sessions;
Marketing data, such as your preferences for receiving our marketing communications and details about your engagement with them; and
Data not specifically listed here, which we will use as described in this Privacy Policy or as otherwise disclosed at the time of collection.

Information Collected Automatically. We and our service providers may automatically log information about you, your computer or mobile device, and your interaction over time with our Site and Services, our communications, and other online services. This information may include:

Device and browser data, such as your computer’s or mobile device’s operating system type and version, your device’s manufacturer and model, browser type, screen resolution, device type (e.g., phone, tablet), IP address, unique identifiers including any identifiers of devices you use, language settings, mobile device carrier, and information indicating the geographic area where your device was located when you accessed our Site; and
Online activity data, such as pages or screens you viewed, how long you spent on a page or screen, your activity on a page or screen, the pages that led or referred you to our Site, links you clicked, your language preferences, and whether you have opened our emails or clicked links within them.

Sometimes we may associate information that does not directly reveal your identity, such as your browser type, with your Personal Information. In that case, we will treat the combined information as Personal Information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

Information We Obtain From Third-Party Sources. We may combine Personal Information we receive from you with information we obtain from other sources, such as information from data licensors that provide demographic and other information.

2. How We Use the Personal Information We Collect

Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the different ways Hopelab uses the information that we gather. Hopelab uses the information it collects for the following purposes:

To create, build, and develop – and help our Partners create, build, and develop – higher-quality, more useful products and services;
To measure demographics and interests regarding specific areas of the Site;
To operate our business;
To engage in research studies;
To recognize, customize, and personalize user experience;
To respond to your requests or inquiries and provide support;
To provide you with updates about our Services and the products and services of our Partners;
To prevent, investigate, and/or provide notice of fraud, unlawful or criminal activity, or unauthorized access to or use of Personal Information, our website, or our data systems;
To comply with other legal obligations, such as to respond to subpoenas, court orders, or other legal process; and
For any other lawful, legitimate business purpose.

De-identification. As part of our activities, we may create aggregated, de-identified, or other anonymous data from Personal Information we collect. We convert Personal Information to anonymous and de-identified data by removing information that makes the data personally identifiable to you. We may use this anonymous data and share it with third parties for our lawful business purposes, including to analyze and improve our Site and Services.

Marketing. We and our service providers may collect and use your Personal Information for purposes of marketing our own Services and the products and services of our Partners. We may send you direct marketing communications, including our newsletters that discuss Hopelab and our Partners. You may opt out of our marketing communications as described in the “Your Rights and Choices” section below, in which case, we will not collect or use your Personal Information for marketing purposes. We will never share your Personal Information with third parties for purposes of those third parties marketing to you, even if you don’t opt out of marketing communications.

With Your Consent. In some cases, we may specifically ask for your consent to collect, use, or share your Personal Information, including when consent is required by law.

Analytics. We may use your Personal Information for analytics purposes, such as to help us understand user activity on the Site, including which pages are most and least visited and how users move around the Site, as well as user interactions with our emails. We may also use your Personal Information for business analytics purposes, such as helping us build and scale our Site and Services.

3. When We May Share Personal Information With Others

Hopelab may share Personal Information with third parties for the following purposes:

To facilitate actions by third-party service providers that perform services on our behalf, such as website management, analytics, and sending emails;
To our Partners, to assist them in developing their products and services;
To legal or government regulatory authorities in response to their request for information or to assist in investigations;
To third parties in connection with claims, disputes, or litigation, when otherwise required by law, or if disclosure is necessary to protect your or our health and safety or to enforce our legal rights;
To investigate potential fraud or unlawful or otherwise criminal activity; and
As part of a business transaction, such as a merger, acquisition, joint venture, or financing or sale of some or all of our assets, including bankruptcy proceedings (your Personal Information could be transferred to a third party as one of the assets in such a transaction and may also be disclosed in the event of insolvency, bankruptcy, or receivership).

In the event that we are legally compelled to disclose your Personal Information to a third party, we will attempt to notify you, unless doing so would violate the law or a court order.

Access to your Personal Information by our service providers is limited to the information reasonably necessary for the provider to perform its limited function for Hopelab. We also contractually require that our service providers not use or disclose your Personal Information for any purpose other than providing us with products and services.

4. Your Health Information

In some cases, we may collect Personal Information about you which identifies your past, present or future physical or mental health status (which we call “Health Information”).

We may collect Health Information directly from you through interviews, sessions, survey responses, or other means; we may also receive Health Information about you from one of our Partners. Health Information may include information on the health care services you have received, your mental health conditions, and your experiences with different health care providers.

We may use your Health Information to provide Services to you. For instance, we may use your Health Information to study youth preferences related to digital health innovations and help our Partners develop or improve mental health apps or other tech solutions aimed at improving the well being of young people. We may share your Health Information with your Partners, but before doing so we will ask for your consent to share your Health Information when required under the law.

This Privacy Policy applies equally to your Health Information as it does to other types of Personal Information about you. You may exercise the rights specified in Section 6 with respect to any Health Information we maintain about you.

5. How Long We Keep Your Personal Information

We will retain your Personal Information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes set forth in this Privacy Policy. We will retain and use your Personal Information to the extent necessary to comply with our legal obligations (for example, if we are required to retain your data to comply with applicable laws), resolve disputes, and enforce our legal agreements and policies.

6. Your Rights and Choices

If you object to our use of your information for direct marketing purposes, please email us at webmaster@Hopelab.org. You may also follow the instructions for opting out in any promotional message you get from us. If you opt out of getting marketing communications, you will continue to receive communications from us about your relationship with us where permitted by law.

You also have the right to:

Access your Personal Information;
Obtain information on how we collected, used, and shared your Personal Information, including a list of any other organizations with which we have shared your Personal Information;
Withdraw any consent that you provided for the collection or sharing of your Personal Information;
Have us correct Personal Information that we maintain about you if such Personal Information proves to be inaccurate or incomplete;
Have us delete Personal Information that we maintain about you;
Request that we restrict the processing of your Personal Information (i) if you contest its accuracy, (ii) if the processing is unlawful and you oppose the deletion of that information, (iii) if it is no longer needed for the purposes set forth in this Privacy Policy but you require it for the establishment, exercise, or defense of a legal claim, or (iv) if you object to profiling (i.e., decisions based on automated processing of your Personal Information that could have legal or similarly significant impact on you);
Receive Personal Information that you provided to us in a structured, commonly used, and machine-readable format and to transmit those to another provider, provided these are processed based on your consent or our contract; and
Lodge a complaint with your relevant data protection authority.

If you wish to exercise any of your above rights, please reach out to us by any of the ways mentioned in the “Contact Us” section. We pledge that your exercising of these rights will not have any impact on your ability to participate in surveys, studies, or other Services offered by Hopelab or use the products offered by our Partners, and you will continue to be able to use our Site if you exercise your rights (although certain Site functions could be more limited).

7. Children

Hopelab is committed to protecting the privacy of children. Our Site and Services are not targeted to children. However, we do conduct studies that may involve the collection of Personal Information from children through means other than our Site, such as via discussion groups for adolescents. Hopelab will always obtain the consent of a parent or legal guardian before collecting Personal Information from a child under the age of 13 as part of a study.

8. International Data Transfer

We are headquartered and solely operate in the United States and do not transfer data internationally.

9. Linked Sites

Our Site may contain links to websites operated by companies other than Hopelab (“Third-Party Sites”) that we believe may be of interest to you. Hopelab generally does not disclose your Personal Information to these Third-Party Sites without obtaining your consent, except that we may disclose your Personal Information to Partners in accordance with the terms of this Privacy Policy and we may use cookies to share your data in accordance with our Cookie Policy. Hopelab does not endorse and is not responsible for the privacy practices of these Third-Party Sites. If you choose to link to one of these Third-Party Sites, you should review the privacy policy posted on the other website to understand how that Third-Party Site collects and uses your Personal Information.

10. Hopelab Security Procedures

The security and confidentiality of your information are extremely important to us. We have implemented technical, administrative, and physical security measures to protect Personal Information from unauthorized access and improper use. We review our security procedures in order to consider appropriate new technology and methods. However, no data transmission over the Internet or other network can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. As a result, while we strive to protect information transmitted to us through our Site or otherwise, we cannot and do not guarantee the security of any information you transmit to us, and you do so at your own risk. The following are some of the security procedures that Hopelab uses to protect your privacy:

Hopelab uses firewalls to protect information held in our servers.
Hopelab utilizes Secure Socket Layer (SSL) encryption in transmitting Personal Information to our servers. In order to take advantage of encryption technology, you must have an Internet browser that supports 128-bit encryption.
Hopelab closely monitors the limited number of Hopelab employees who potentially have access to your Personal Information.
Hopelab requires all Hopelab employees to agree to abide by our Privacy Policy and be subject to disciplinary action if they violate it.
Hopelab backs up our systems to protect the integrity of your Personal Information.

11. Your Responsibility

You are responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the Personal Information you submit to Hopelab. Inaccurate information will affect the information you receive when using the Site and Services, as well as our ability to contact you. For example, your email address should be kept current because we may communicate with you via email.

Please note that Hopelab reviews its privacy practices from time to time and that these practices are subject to change. We will post the changes here. Your continued use of our Site and Services constitutes your agreement to abide by the policy as changed.
