Examining The Social Effects of Cancer

Newly published research, sponsored by Hopelab, examining the social effects of cancer on the adolescent and young adult community was recently featured on “CBS This Morning.” The study, conducted by a cross-disciplinary team of researchers and published in the journal Cancer, shows that nearly 32% of young cancer patients (ages 14 – 39) had persistently low levels of social functioning up to 24 months after their primary diagnosis, especially with survivorship issues like fertility, body image, and reintegration back into work / school, etc. It’s very gratifying to see mainstream media coverage of such an important issue – the unique challenges for AYAs living with cancer, and a reminder that we can be doing so much more to meet these very real psychosocial needs.
